Almost unwillingly, Holmes and Watson find themselves being drawn ever deeper into an international conspiracy connected to the teeming criminal underworld of Boston, the gaslit streets of London, opium dens and much, much more.

Horowitz does a fantastic job of keeping all the proverbial balls in the air, creating a perfectly-plotted set of mysteries, and a more-than-satisfactory set of solutions, while all the time maintaining the spirit of the original stories.

Horowitz plots masterfully, foregrounding Holmes' trademark investigative techniques against Watson's pacey narration. It’s been a complete pleasure working with you and your team on a cracking couple of sold out shows – look forward to being back with you soon. As they are leaving, Holmes notices an unusual building opposite and Reverend Fitzsimmons tells him it is used for performances. Similarly, Watson now considers the fate of the criminals he and Holmes brought to justice and imagines their fear of execution.Nabihah is currently working on her second album at Somerset House in London, where she is an artist-in-residence. The assassins were only very mildly suspicious apparently, investigating Holmes’ lateness in dying about 3 pm.

This investigation takes up about the first third of the novel, introducing Carstairs’ wife whom he met on the voyage home from America, and Carstairs’ sister who is convinced that Mrs Carstairs is evil.The other is that the resolution to the story here is exceptionally lurid, and thus out of character with any of the original stories. Canon characters mentioned in the book include Godfrey Emsworth, Inspector Morton, Mrs Cecil Forrester, Stanley Hopkins, Jabez Wilson, Violet Hunter and Jephro Rucastle, Culverton Smith, and Jonas Oldacre. Although he indicates this kills her, apparently she manages to have a holiday with a friend and at least two successful pregnancies after catching the fever before her eventual death. It reminded me a lot of how ITV have treated recent Poirot and Marple televisations - by adding in sex. When Watson arrives at the prison, he discovers Holmes has escaped of his own accord, disguised as an aide to the prison doctor, whom he had once helped as a client.

The following morning Holmes receives a telegram from Carstairs, which informs him that his home was burgled during the night and that he has informed the police - information Holmes was anticipating. However inured we modern day readers may be to scandal and corruption, the truth about the House of Silk will still shock, if not surprise.

Carstairs informs them that he is being followed by a mysterious man who has appeared to him three times and requested a meeting which he did not appear at. Horowitz is clearly familiar with the original series and yet he has chosen to reinterpret characters and give ‘new twists’ where in my opinion he should have stayed true to the original material.
